The UK Government has given local authorities millions of pounds to provide grants to small businesses in various sectors that have been adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, plus a specific grant for businesses in the leisure, retail and hospitality industries whose businesses have been similarly affected.
Southend Council has already paid over a 1,000 grants of £10,000 each to small businesses in Southend. Small businesses are eligible for this grant if they are in receipt of small business rate relief.
Thirty BACS payment of up to £25,000 per property depending on their rateable value have also been approved for businesses in the leisure, retail and hospitality industry.
Over 2,000 businesses have applied for these grants so far, and Southend Council teams have worked tirelessly – including throughout the Easter Bank Holiday – to ensure the applications are processed and funds released as soon as possible to help support businesses cash flow. However, the council is concerned that there a still a number of businesses that are eligible but haven’t applied.
The application process for these grants is not onerous, albeit naturally fraud checks are in place, and they are processed very quickly.
