Industry Champions is a simple brokerage service between schools and employers/businesses with the aim of improving careers provision in schools.

Research shows that a young person who has four or more encounters with employers is 86% less likely to be unemployed or not in education or training and can earn up to 18% more during their career.

Industry Champions logoThe Southend Learning Network is looking for business people to become Industry Champions:  individuals who volunteer to work directly with young people, parents, schools, colleges and career seekers in various ways to help improve employability skills.

Industry Champions might be from any industry and at any stage in their own career path from the CEO to a large organisation, a sole trader or even an apprentice.

A monthly email is sent to registered Industry Champions containing all the different opportunities to volunteer in Southend schools and colleges.  If any of the opportunities fit the individual’s diary and objectives, the Industry Champion confirms their interest.  Their contact details are then sent to the school link person so that  final arrangements can be made directly with the parties involved.

Amongst other things, Industry Champions includes mentoring, career talks, assemblies, mock interviews, interactive workshops and opportunities to work on a more strategic level in schools developing their careers provision.

The advantage of registering as an Industry Champion is that it provides an opportunity to support our young people but recognises that business people are very busy. The monthly email ensures that the approach is very flexible, and Industry Champions can completely control the amount of time and type of engagement they can commit to.
